Windshield wipers are a familiar and everyday thing for any car enthusiast. Let's consider the main reasons for poor performance of windshield wipers.
Stripes on the glass. This effect occurs when cracks form on the edge of the tape. Cracks are formed whenwiper blades work on dry dirty glass or on an icy crust, as well as on glass with stuck insects or tree resin. In this case, it is not recommended to turn on the wipers when the windshield is dirty or frozen; it is necessary to clean the glass before driving. Edge cracks also form as a result of the natural aging of the brushes - under the influence of UV rays, the rubber hardens and loses elasticity.
Uncleaned areas of the windshield. They appear when the rubber strip of the windshield wiper is deformed. This is usually caused by contamination of the frame brushes or temperature deformation. If the brushes are dirty, the free movement of the rubber strip in the mounts is disrupted (the strip "goes in waves") or the rocker arm hinges lose mobility. In this case, it is usually enough to remove the wiper blades and wash them in warm water. Irreversible deformation of the rubber strip usually occurs with prolonged exposure to high temperatures, when you leave the car in the scorching sun for several days. To avoid this effect, you can lift the brushes so that they do not touch the glass. In case of irreversible deformation, the only way out is to replace the windshield wipers.
Brush jumping on the glass. Usually, the wiper blade starts jumping on the glass, leaving radial stripes, in two cases. At high speed, the windage of the blade increases and it is pressed away from the windshield - this effect is typical for frame wipers without a spoiler. If you find yourself in such a situation, it is recommended to change the blades to those that have a spoiler or to frameless ones, which have good aerodynamics. The second reason is a loose mechanism of the holder of classic brushes, the fastening unit or the wiper system leashes. In such a situation, it is necessary to check the play of the leashes and rocker arms, the correct attachment of the wiper blade to the leash. If necessary, replace the brushes. The third reason is a curved wiper leash. In this case, the brush usually cleans satisfactorily in one direction, and poorly in the other. In this case, there is a chance that the leash is slightly twisted "screw". In this case, it is necessary to fix or replace the wiper arm so that the wiper blade is at a right angle to the glass surface.
Cloudy glass. In a situation where the glass is not cleaned by the wipers and remains cloudy, there are two possible reasons. In the first case, it is necessary to check what kind of contamination is on the glass. It may be some kind of viscous chemical compound or resin, then the glass and brushes should be thoroughly washed. In the second case, a longitudinal rupture of the rubber band at the place of the movable joint - the cleaning element does not maintain the specified working angle. This is an extreme version of the "Uncleaned area" problem.
